Overview/Background |
At the 6th APEC Ministerial Meeting held in 1994, Jarkata, Indonesia, Ministers stressed that the priority for all APEC economies is the development of international and domestic information infrastructure and further recognized the interest of the Working Group on Telecommunications in the development of an APEC information infrastructure.
Ministers also agreed to the objectives and principles for enhancing the Asia-Pacific Information Infrastructure (APII), at the first APEC Ministerial Meeting on Telecommunications and Information Industry (TELMIN) held in May 1995, Seoul, Republic of Korea. Endorsed at the 2nd TELMIN meeting held in Gold Coast, Australia, 1996, APII Cooperation center was established in October 1996 in Korea
Thus, APII Cooperation Center is responsible for cooperating joint endeavors of the APEC member economies to build the APII and is also supporting extensive cooperative activities of the APEC TEL Working Group such as building the APII and promoting IT usage within the APEC region.
To this end, the role of APII Cooperation Center is:
developing and carrying out APII cooperative projects including the APII test-bed projects; assisting APII-related events;
Implementing various activities in the APEC TEL Working Group (APEC TEL Projects)
providing information through the APEC TEL website which contains APEC TEL documents and APII-related information which can easily be accessed and shared by all APEC member economies;
and supporting human resource development in the region through IT Human Resources Exchange Programs. |
