Network Management
For the first phase of TEIN, a direct intercontinental link of 2Mbps to 34Mbps has been launched between Korea Advanced Research Network (KOREN) of Korea and Reseau National de Telecommunications pour la Technologie, l'Enseignement et la Recherche (RENATER) of France in December 2001. The Korea-France Research Network is jointly managed by APIICC at KISDI in Korea and GIP RENATER in France. As of September 2003, the network is being co-funded by the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) of Korea and the Ministry of Research of France. TEIN supports the deployment of a higher capacity telecommunications infrastructure between Asia and Europe. Through a couple of Expert Group Meetings (EGM) on TEIN among ASEM member countries in 2001 and 2002, they reached common understanding for the future TEIN development. For example, regarding the Europe-Asia ASEM linkage, the present direct Korea-France linkage will be continued, and regarding intra-Asia connectivity, direct linkages will be established between Korea and an ASEM partner from Southeast Asia. For expansion of TEIN to Southeast Asia, Malaysia and Korea have made joint efforts to take the initiative in leading TEIN expansion links in Southeast Asia since October 2002.

Partnership with TEIN2 Project
In support of TEIN ASEM Initiative, EC and DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Networking Technology to Europe) launched a new research networking project in the name of TEIN2 in order to increase access between GEANT and Asian research networks with particular emphasis on the developing countries in Southeast Asia. TEIN2 follows on from the successful TEIN connection between France and Korea, on which some 250 institutions worldwide collaborate in joint research projects with Korean researchers. The project will proceed in two phases from 2004 to 2007. APII Cooperation Center, as the original leader of TEIN, is building strong physical and human research networking foundations with TEIN2, in the context of developing TEIN into the ideal partner for TEIN2. For example, APII Cooperation Center plays a role of policy advisor in TEIN2 Technical Committee, with substantial experience of networking Asia & Europe.

Research Collaborations between Korea and EU, Asia
Following on from the year 2003, APII Cooperation Center selected eight international joint research projects using TEIN & APII Testbeds and six working groups for financial support. TEIN and APII Testbeds allow a better collaboration between Korea and EU, Asia, from which the researchers and scientists across the regions benefit by developing virtual laboratories or virtual institutes on the advanced networks. The contents vary from network technology such as IPv6 to real life application service including tele-medicine.
