APII Testbed project aims at contributing to build the advanced information infrastructure in the Asia Pacific region which would form the basis for bridging the digital divide and achieving sustainable growth in the region. In year 2005, APII Test-beds have expanded by joining in other global advanced networks such as TEIN2 and TransPAC2, which are also well connected locally to KOREN and KREONET.
As for the Korea-Japan APII link, launched in 1998, has enabled further expansion of research collaborations with other Asian countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand. In November this year, in an effort of meeting the increasing need for inter-continental research between Asia and U.S., EU, Korea-Japan APII Testbed was upgraded to 2Gbps from 1Gbps.
In addition, APII Testbeds are already linked to the EU's GEANT, the pan-European gigabit research network, forming the Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN), which was created in December 2001.
Following the year 2004 Asian DHX (Digital Heritage Exchange) Forum, we have hosted another Forum for this year for the purpose of sharing the experience of Asian countries and other continents demonstration of digital cultural heritage contents through High Definition video transmission over high-speed network infrastructure around the world. This event was held in conjunction with the 32nd APEC Telecommunications and Information Working Group (TEL) meeting held in Seoul (6th Sept. 2005); along with the real-time demonstration with the U.S. and Spain, dual live cyber performance between Korea and the US was successfully made over the APII and TransPAC2.
In contributing to closing the digital divide and realizing the information society within the Asia-Pacific region, APII-CC has been continuously joining efforts on various projects within the APEC Telecommunications and Information Working Group (TEL) and the official APEC TEL WG website (www.apectelwg.org) is being maintained by the APII-CC since 1998 and recently has been upgraded to serve as a communications channel for the fora.
I believe these fruitful outcomes could not have been met without your interest and collaboration.
