APII JP-KR
Launched in 1998, Korea-Japan APII Testbed is a link between Korea and Japan via 10Gbps cable and connected to Japanese International Advanced Networks such as AI3 (Asian Internet Interconnection Initiatives), enabling further expanded research collaborations with other Asian countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand.
In response to International Research Network Connectivity (IRNC) program solicitation by NSF of US, APII Cooperation Center and APII Technology Center mutually agreed on enhancing IRNC by TransPAC2 project (the high performance network between Asia and US) during the APII Expert Group Meeting held at KISDI in May 2004. As APII-CC joined in its opening ceremony, the Center became one of the TransPAC2 members, which makes available the more improved network environment between Korea and US.
Also in an effort of meeting the increasing need for inter-continental research between Asia and US, EU, Korea-Japan APII Testbed was upgraded to 10Gbps from 2Gbps on December 2006. The link employs 250km-long Korea-Japan Cable Network (KJCN), the shortest cable between the two countries, run by KT, Kyushu Electric Power Co. Inc. etc. Following the previous 2Gbps version, the new 10Gbps link is also of seamless IPLC (international private leased circuit) and gigabit ethernet service.
Through joint activities such as the APII/Hyeonhae-Genkai workshop with the APII Technology Center, the APII Cooperation Center regularly discusses the future plan on the KR-JP APII Testbed and promotes research collaborations between the two countries. Since September 2004, it is organized as an annual event jointly by APII-CC and APII-TC. Korea-Japan APII link will continue to provide the network environment for its users such as Genkai-Hyeonhae Group to conduct the wide applications of digital cultural exchange, medical treatment information sharing, etc. as well as for the up-to-date areas such as IPv6, Grid of next-generation Internet technology.
