Introduction |
Background
The Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN) is one of the new initiatives endorsed by ASEM III (October 2000, Seoul, Korea) to connect research networks between Asia and Europe by linking EU's GEANT, the pan-European gigabit research network, with Asia's research networks such as the APII Testbeds in order to promote information exchanges in research and development and education. At ASEM III, Korea, European Commission (EC) and Singapore jointly proposed the TEIN project. The ASEM leaders emphasized the need to establish and expand information and research networks between the two regions and among ASEM partners in order to facilitate the flow of knowledge and information as well as research endeavors. This initiative aims to contribute to enhancing exchanges and cooperation between Asia and Europe through increased and more effective information flows; enhance and diversify research exchanges and cooperation between Asia and Europe; expand and diversify speedier and more powerful telecommunication connections between Asia and Europe.
TEIN1
For the first phase of TEIN initiative, a direct intercontinental link of 2Mbps was launched between Europe (Reseau National de Telecommunications pour la Technologie, l'Enseignement et la Recherche: RENATER of France) and Asia (Korea Advanced Research Network: KOREN of Korea) in December 2001. The TEIN link (KR-FR) is being jointly managed by the APII Cooperation Center at KISDI and GIP RENATER in France. As of August 2004, the network is being co-funded by the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) of Republic of Korea and the Ministry of Research of France. TEIN supports the deployment of a higher capacity telecommunications infrastructure between Asia and Europe. Through a couple of Expert Group Meetings (EGM) on TEIN among ASEM member countries in 2001 and the following year, common understanding for continuous development of TEIN initiative had been reached. At an increasing demand for the increased capacity, TEIN KR-FR link was again upgraded to 155Mbps IPLC from 45Mbps ATM in December 2004.
Development into TEIN2
In support of TEIN ASEM Initiative, EC and DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Networking Technology to Europe) launched a new research networking project in the name of TEIN2 in January 2004 to increase access between GEANT and Asian research networks with particular emphasis on the developing countries in Asia. TEIN2 Link is to be operated from the third quarter of year 2005 until the end of year 2007.
Through a series of TEIN2 Technical Committee meetings, TEIN2 has been designed for sustainable implementation with every detail such as network topology, funding, etc. For effective development of the TEIN Initiative, APII Cooperation Center plays an active role in coordinating and cooperating with partners from EU as well as the Asian members of ASEM. The TEIN2 network will be established early in 2006 and it will be connected to most ASEM-Asia countries, i.e., Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, China, Japan, Korea and Australia reaching European countries via GEANT2.
Objectives
According to the TEIN concept paper prepared by Korea in May 2000, TEIN Initiative was designed to
- Contribute to enhancing exchanged and cooperation between Asia and Europe though increased and more effective information flows
- Enhance and diversify research exchanges and cooperation between Asia and Europe
- Expand and diversify speedier and more powerful telecommunication connections between Asia and Europe
